TASSAJARA HOT SPRINGS, Monterey County — October 30, 2026. The San Francisco Zen Center is recruiting resident students for Tassajara Zen Mountain Center’s 2027 summer program, April 6 through September 21. Unlike a paid guest retreat or the separate January–March winter practice period, the Summer Student Practice program does not charge participants for room, vegetarian meals or participation. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis according to the center’s published announcement and housing capacity.

How long must a student stay?

The center describes stays ranging from two weeks to the entire summer, with priority given to longer stays and earlier applications. Resident students help operate the community through kitchen, garden, dining room, cabin, shop and maintenance work while participating in daily meditation, Buddhist study and community activities. This is not a paid vacation at a hot-spring resort: applicants should understand the communal living rules and work schedule before applying.

What about longer apprenticeships?

The organization says students who stay continuously for three to five months may qualify for its Work Practice Apprenticeship, a program that can carry a modest stipend and credits toward later intensive Zen practice periods. It identifies two useful arrival deadlines for credits: April 22, 2027, for a five-month stay and two credits, and June 7, 2027, for a three-month stay and one credit. These are program eligibility dates, not promises of acceptance or guaranteed payment for every applicant.

Is the public guest season the same thing?

No. The monastery’s general 2027 operating calendar lists guest retreats from April 27 through September 5, with reservations to open in January 2027. Resident Summer Students work and practice at Tassajara during a broader season that begins earlier and ends later. A summer student application does not secure a tourist lodging reservation or public day-use access.

How to apply

Review the official Summer 2027 Student Program announcement and application link. Questions about residential participation can be sent to zmcdirector@sfzc.org. The site is remote, and cellular reception can be unreliable along Tassajara Road; applicants should follow the center’s current access and transportation instructions rather than ordinary map navigation alone.

Editorial note: This newly announced residential student program is distinct from the winter 2027 paid practice-period application already covered by California58. Admission and stipend eligibility require the organization’s approval.
