TASSAJARA HOT SPRINGS, Monterey County — October 30, 2026. Tassajara Zen Mountain Center continues its recovery after a March 26, 2026 fire destroyed the monastery’s zendo, or meditation hall. According to San Francisco Zen Center, the building had served the community since 1978. No injuries were reported, but the hall and adjoining bathroom and first-aid structures were lost.

How has daily practice continued?

In its June 8 update, the Zen Center said the community had established a temporary zendo inside the Retreat Hall, transforming that space between meditation and guest use. The center also reported electrical service restored during April, and environmental testing found no unusual hazardous-material levels beyond those typical of a structure fire. Those are dated recovery milestones, not a claim that a permanent replacement has already opened.

What is known about the investigation?

The center’s June 2 statement said Monterey County sheriff’s authorities had arrested a person suspected of involvement and filed charges. An arrest is not a conviction, and California58 has not independently verified the later disposition of any case. Earlier suggestions about a possible electrical cause were preliminary; the center itself said the blaze was so destructive that its precise origin could not be established. We are not attributing responsibility to any individual.

What would rebuilding require?

San Francisco Zen Center leaders warned that a new hall would have to comply with current building codes on a difficult-to-reach mountain site, and costs were expected to exceed insurance recovery. Officials reported working with legal counsel and Monterey County on approvals. The center has a dedicated fire recovery fund but has not established a verified completion date in these updates.

Editorial note: This story concerns a March 2026 structural fire and its documented recovery, not the distinct August Timber Fire that later caused smoky conditions and disrupted the guest season.
