TASSAJARA HOT SPRINGS, Monterey County — October 2026. Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, deep in the Ventana Wilderness, has a fall 2026 monastic practice period scheduled from October 7 through December 19. San Francisco Zen Center lists this as the 116th Tassajara practice period, led by Abbot Dōshin Mako Voelkel. The program is for accepted applicants—not an invitation for tourists to drive to the hot springs.
Who can visit Tassajara now?
According to San Francisco Zen Center’s official visitor information, Tassajara is closed to the general public from September through April, when it operates as a cloistered Soto Zen training monastery. Its summer guest season is by advance reservation only. People seeking a spontaneous day trip should not assume the hot springs are open in October or that road access makes them eligible to visit.
What is happening during the fall period?
The training schedule includes sitting meditation, study, chanting, shared work and formal meals. The center’s fall description says participants explore Dōgen’s Genjōkōan. The published application had a September 30 deadline; the organizer states later submissions might be considered if space remains. That exception does not create general public access. Eligibility and arrangements are controlled by the organizer.
Why extra precautions are important in 2026
In August 2026, the Zen Center reported canceling the remainder of its summer guest season because smoke from the Timber Fire affected the valley, while the organization’s fall program listing remained in place. The center also warns about fall and winter road conditions, including possible flooding, debris flows, slides and temporary inaccessibility. A scheduled event is not a live guarantee that access is unaffected on any particular date.
When might the public return?
San Francisco Zen Center’s Tassajara schedule lists a 2027 guest season from April 27 to September 5, with details and reservations handled by the center. This is an announced future schedule, subject to change; it is not a public-access permit for the present fall season. Those planning a visit should review the center’s latest visitor updates and reservation policy before traveling the remote access road.
